Valley of Fires

Valley of Fires Recreation Area and the Malpais Lava Flow are at the northern end of the Tularosa Basin. The lava came from vents at the northern end and flowed south for 44 miles, the 4-6 mile wide flow occasionally surrounding sandstone islands (kipukas). The lava is 160 feet thick and covers 125 square miles.
